I've been watching the Democratic Underground discussion boards, and there seems to a growing expectation of some big about to happen. They seem to be convinced that Cindy Sheehan's protest at the Bush ranch in Crawford, Texas, is going to be the catalyst for momentous events that will spell the end of this administration:
I May Be Crazy! But, I Believe Crawford Is THE Event! It Is Different...I have not felt so juiced and ready to go since this stupid illegal war started. Pura Vida Dreamin referred to it as "Our Ukraine". Great desacription! [sic]
I truly believe that this protest action is EXACTLY what we have all been waiting for. The one that is going to bring it all together!
Up until now, the Anti-war has been composed of a large number of .orgs, none offering a face. Someone that America could identify with. Not to take away from the great work of these organizations, as they have been making important things happen all along!
It is just that it is hard for a news viewer to empathize with an organization. Cindy Sheehan has stepped up in her grief and become someone that all Americans can relate to in a personal level.
Call me an optimist. But, I think this is going to ignite broad nationwide opposition. Not just "disapproval", active opposition!
I have been on this ride for a long time now, I have been to several major demonstrations, I have closely tracked others. This feels very different to me. "Old school" for lack of a better description.
None of the blatant partisan games. Just us people camping on the guy's doorstep until he deals with us or he sneaks out the back door.
I don't think it is just me that is feeling this. Am I crazy or are you with me?
KEEP UP THE CONSTANT SUPPORT! THEY ARE IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL! WE ARE TOO!
This is just one example. There are many more. One poster predicts 200,000 people to descent on Bush ranch in Crawford, Texas. Others say the impending arrest of Cindy Sheehan (crystal balls abound at DU) will ignite the political firestorm.
This has to be the sleeper story of the century, since not a single whisper of any of this is in the main stream media, who you'd think would be gleeful over potential embarassment, or worse, for President George W. Bush.
Aren't journalists getting a sense of the seismic events only hours away? Could they not read these predictions themselves? Maybe it's the manic quality to these posts that is putting them off. The sense of someone who doesn't believe in God praying for a miracle.
You can see the prayer-like quality in the example post: "I don't think it is just me that is feeling this. Am I crazy or are you with me?" The plaintive search for someone to tell him everything will be OK, the mark of a person who knows nothing is OK in his world.
Well, miracles do happen, I suppose. I guess we'll all see by Friday.
