Compromise is only possible when the two sides are evenly matched, and a bruising battle needs to be avoided. Instead, the government, the courts, and most of the press ganged up on the marriage traditionalists. Certainly the Christian traditionalists have been on the ropes for years. What power do Christians have with which to bargain with that other group? The threat of eternal damnation? They don't believe in that. Votes in the next election? Ah, the election is ages away. Withhold taxes? Right, and go to jail.
There was never going to be a compromise, nor will there be in the future. The forces behind same-sex marriage, led by ex-MP Svend Robinson and Justice Minister Irwin Cotler, would not consider it, even as it was offered. Nor will they consider a compromise on queer education, lawsuits against attempts by religious institutions to control access to their property or services, constraints on religious discourse in the public domain, and finally on the tax exempt status of religious organizations.
The goal: the elimination of organized religion as a counterweight to secular humanism, and perhaps the dissolution of organized religions altogether.
