An internet thief gets caught

Michelle Malkin has the story of how a bunch of leftists hackers were going to wreak havoc on the conservative counter-protest organization Protest Warrior. After spending months trying, they managed to hack in and steal the credit card numbers of thousands of people who supported Protest Warrior with donations. With those numbers, they planned to:

  • charge hundreds of dollars per stolen credit card number as donations to various left-wing organizations by using an automated donation submission script

  • send the entire ProtestWarrior HQ database (complete with usernames, passwords, and operation details) to left-wing groups hostile to ProtestWarrior (including the entire contents of our mail server)

  • upload all credit card numbers and other sensitive customer information to hundreds of anarchist and left-wing sites (specifically Indymedia) as a downloadable zip file

  • anonymously send press releases and material to thousands of media contacts to boast of the malicious hack and the millions of dollars defrauded, and to publish any and all sensitive information regarding the ProtestWarrior organization

  • erase the entire PW server

  • launch simultaneous attacks on other conservative sites

Fortunately, this story has a happy ending. Jeremy Hammond was caught, and already he's whining that he did nothing wrong:

On March 17 2005, nine Chicago FBI agents raided and seized all electronic equipment in Jeremy Hammond's apartment. Facing intimidation from both the FBI and the Secret Service, he is being accused of hacking into right-wing website ProtestWarrior.com. While the website had not been damaged and no credit cards were billed, the FBI is threatening to charge him with unauthorized access and credit card fraud totalling to millions of dollars in damages and up to thirty years in federal prison for a crime that hasn't even happened.

Better yet, if you want to make it clear that anyone who steals you personal information from a secure server, especially information that provides access to you personal funds, he is already guilty of a crime, feel free to send a note to the same email address.
