Montreal can wait, Prime Minister

The Prime Minister is in Montreal today:

Municipal officials join Premier Jean Charest and Prime Minister Paul Martin in Montreal later Tuesday for what is being called a major funding announcement.

The prime minister is expected to announce the deal to hand over $1.15 billion from the federal gas tax to Quebec over the next five years.

Well over $100 million is expected to be coming to Quebec this year, money that will be spent on projects such as infrastructure repair and public transit.

Speaking of infrastructure repair:

Residents from evacuated neighbourhoods along the Elbow River are slowly being allowed to return home, as the river level begins to drop.

Calgary city officials have been inspecting the homes before allowing people back in; the latest to go home are several dozen people who live on Roxboro Road.

The city is still restricting the amount of water residents can use, as the water treatment plants struggle to produce enough for demand.

The river water coming into the plants is so full of silt and debris that the facilities are struggling to produce enough clean water.

Though I hate to say it, I'm beginning to think Paul Martin doesn't really care unless there are votes in it. He knows he won't win many votes in Alberta, so why bother?

Maybe he doesn't think Albertans are really Canadians. That can't be it. Frankly, I can't even begin to rationalize Paul Martin's scheduling priorities.
