Why the Sponsorship Program was a good thing

If the Liberals are so bereft of leadership that they cannot inspire Canadians to be proud of their country, then they have no business being in power. If Canadians can't care enough about their country until someone is paying them to notice, then maybe the real problem is with Canada, and I hold out little hope that we have enough time to fix it.

Patriotism is learned at your father's knee, if you'll forgive the sexist imagery. My four-year-old daughter asked my once who was on a coin. I took her to the computer, sat her on my lap, and called up some pages showing pictures of the Queen, and of Windsor Castle, and explained as much as she could handle about who the Queen was and where she lived. Now she pesters me every few days to show her the Queen's Castle.

And I promise, I did not pay her, or ply her with Maple-Leaf-emblazoned beer mugs filled with milk.

How much money did the US government have
to shell out in "sponsorship" to get this father to
take his little girl to this patriotic rally? I don't
know for a fact, but I'd bet money the answer
is exactly zero.
